Alkermes called on Manta to assist in developing the next generation inhaler to be used with their proprietary dry powder technology. While the new device would benefit the user by replacing the need for injection by syringe, Alkermes realized that ease of use, user perception, quality and reliability would be critical in gaining acceptance of new delivery technology and in attracting pharmaceutical partners.

Manta studied current devices and user behaviors to simplify operation and optimize the user experience. Our team conceptualized unique mechanism designs and engineered the part designs to meet reliability, cost and regulatory requirements. We fabricated a range of prototypes for technical and user evaluation, and were integral in bringing the inhaler design through to production. The resulting solution minimizes the number of operational steps. Simple, soft, friendly forms and a crisp, light color scheme communicate simplicity, usability and cleanliness.

The success of the new inhaler has led to development of important partnerships for Alkermes. Manta is currently developing next generation inhalers for delivery of insulin and hormones for Alkermes’ partner Eli Lilly, as well as for Alkermes’ own proprietary applications. Our most recent efforts have expanded to include target market analysis and design of the total system of use, including design of drug packaging, carrying cases, and directions for use.
